This book, published in 1987 and it’s predecessor Indian Colonial Silver (1973) are the standard works on the subject.
This volume contains the names, biographical details, addresses and working lives of some 900 Jewellers, Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, Engravers, Watchmakers and Clockmakers who left Europe for the Indian sub-continent between 1760 and 1860 in search of success and fortune. Many succumbed to the climate.They came from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales , France, Denmark and other parts of Europe, and worked in all the major centres: Calcutta, Madras and Bombay as well as cantonments and hill stations such as Bangalore and Simla.
There are more than 150 half-tone illustrations, including many of the identifying marks used by the craftsmen to distinguish their wares. There is an introduction explaining the growth of these crafts within the wider development of the British involvement in India.
